RESIDENTS will hold a candlelight vigil at 1 Wolseley St Haberfield from 6pm to 8pm tonight after it was destroyed by WestCONnex contractors earlier today.
The former family home in the Haberfield conservation area was occupied by two residents last Saturday, who were later charged with trespass. The home was demolished along with several others to make way for a WestCONnex construction compound.
“It is utterly disgraceful that the Baird Government destroyed these much-loved homes at the same time the People’s WestConnex Inquiry was hearing evidence at NSW Parliament about the secretive and undemocratic way this project is being forced on the people of NSW,” said WestCONnex Action Group (WAG) spokesperson Pauline Lockie.
“The Baird Government is literally bulldozing WestCONnex through communities with no transparency and no accountability. Yet this tollway has all the signs of being an even bigger financial disaster than the Cross City or Land Cove tunnels – and it will do nothing to ease Sydney’s traffic congestion.
“That’s why residents will be holding this vigil to protest this senseless destruction. And it’s why we can expect residents to keep taking direct action to protect our community and our city until the Baird Government calls a halt to WestCONnex.”
