On Tuesday 31 January, the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) Sydney Branch will be hosting a free BBQ for residents who are campaigning against the WestCONnex tollway. Free - all welcome. RSVP below.
More info from the MUA's Facebook event page:
The MUA Sydney Branch has been supporting the WestCONnex protest camp. WestCONnex activists have been standing up against the multi-billion tollway project, which has been implemented without any community consolation.
Once again, the Liberal Government is favouring the interests of corporations and developers over local communities.
To make matters worse, WestCONnex activists have experienced serious police aggression. This has been allowed to happen as the State Liberal Government has introduced new laws, which gives police excessive powers to:
- Stop, search and detain protestors
- To seize protestors
- And to shut down peaceful protests that obstruct traffic
These laws have direct implications for our communities and the union movement in NSW, making it harder for concerned citizens to stand up and fight for their communities against the political elite and big business.
Following the monthly stop work meeting, the Branch is hosting a free community BBQ in support of the WestCONnex activists.
When the monthly meeting finishes, a bus will take MUA members down to the WestCONnex protest camp in St. Peters at 12:30pm.
The bus will also return MUA members to Sussex Street.
(Alternatively, people can meet us at Sydney Park on the corner of Euston RD and Campbell RD, St Peters. The BBQ will kick off from 1pm).
All MUA members and supporters are welcome to come!
